Nineteen on campus studios use DaVinci Resolve Studio at the award winning film school.
Fremont, CA, USA – Tuesday, October 22, 2024 – Blackmagic Design today announced that Ringling College of Art and Design relies on DaVinci Resolve Studio for editing and color grading across 19 studios throughout the campus.
Based in Sarasota, FL, the four year film program (www.ringling.edu/film/) gives students a hands on opportunity to try every role from pre production to post and has been included in MovieMaker Magazine’s list of best film schools in the U.S. and Canada for two years running. It’s also consistently ranked by The Hollywood Reporter, The Wrap, and Variety.
Central to the film program is Ringling College Studio Labs, a commercial and academic film and post production facility which spans the length of a city block and includes five professional soundstages, 5,000 square feet of post production space and a color grading suite powered by DaVinci Resolve Studio and a DaVinci Resolve Advanced Panel.
“Studio Labs is set up with commercial clients in mind, meaning clients rent out the space and the students have the opportunity to learn in rooms set up for the highest caliber of work,” said Troy Logan, Studio Labs coordinator, Ringling College. “Studio Labs also has four smaller edit bays running DaVinci Resolve Studio, and separately, the College has 14 editing suites on the main campus also running DaVinci Resolve Studio. Not to mention, most students have it on their laptops that the College supplies them with when they enter as freshmen.”
“DaVinci Resolve Studio has been part of our color grading classes for more than five years now, but it has become a larger part of the curriculum, especially in the last several years, as it’s easier to learn than other post applications out there,” said Keith Elliott, post production systems engineer, Ringling College.
“Students love DaVinci Resolve, it’s sleek and has an understandable layout, and it’s accessible with a free version,” added Logan. “Not to mention its feature rich color tools and it’s easy to jump into but has plenty to master.”
“As more projects have been making their way through the facility over the years, we have added both the Studio and the free version to our bays and classrooms, and we also have a DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel available upon request. Additionally, each room that incorporates a projector has either an Intensity Pro 4K or DeckLink 8K Pro capture card,” Elliott explained.
Logan agreed, noting, “We’ve had both an uptick in students and clients, and our facility is on par with that of what you’d find in NYC or LA.”
Logan concluded, “While DaVinci Resolve is the standard for grading, a lot of students opt to edit their films in it, too. DaVinci Resolve is the fan favorite here for editing and color with its in depth tools and all the bells and whistles to take a project from start to finish.”
